The Truman Doctrine
A policy created to counter the spread of communism. Truman pledged to contain Soviet threats to Greece and Turkey.
Korean War
Communist North Korea invaded South Korea. The U.S. came to South Korea's aid. The Soviet Union was helping North Korea which worsened Cold War tensions.
Senator Joseph McCarthy
McCarthy spent five years trying to expose communists in the U.S. government. He convinced many people that the governement was packed with traitors and spies. He also accused celeberities of being communist. He is known as the leader of a modern day "witch hunt".

The Bay of Pigs was a failed invasion of cuba undertaken by the CIA.
Cuban Missile Crisis
The Cuban Missile Crisis was a 13 day confrontation between the U.S. and Soviet Union. The Soiet Union planted nuclear missiles in cuba pointing toward the U.S.
The Interstate Highway Act
President Dwight Eisenhower signed this act in 1956. It created a 41,000 mile network of roads. This was in part created for safe and quick evacuation routes in case of a nuclear attack.
The Election of 1960
This election was extremley important because of televesion. For the first time Americans were seeing the effects of war. Images from Vietnam were broadcast nation wide.
